Fifteen

When I arrived home that evening after work, the TV blared from inside the house as I climbed the cement steps to the porch. I was positive that I hadn’t left it on, which made me curious who had. I didn’t necessarily fear that whoever was in my house was a deadly opponent skilled with powerful magic since Birdie and I had been diligent in keeping our protection brew going strong. In fact, I had two more pots of water that had been out all night soaking up the moon’s energy in order to keep our witchy potpourri spell effective.

But someone was in there.

As I reached for the pepper spray in my purse, cackles of laughter echoed from inside the house, and I frowned. Birdie? Was she crazy? Anyone walking by along the trail out back might hear her.

I shook my head at her irresponsible behavior as I dug for the house key instead. I wasn’t happy, either, that my uncertainties about Birdie’s murder had led me straight to worry so quickly.

Once I’d secured the key between my fingers, I slipped it into the lock and turned the knob. Birdie lay propped on a pillow with her chubby belly exposed and her legs spread, looking like an old sailor after a long day’s work. The TV and the laughter that I’d heard outside had been too much. Inside, they were enough to vibrate the walls.

The TV host cracked an off-color joke and sent Birdie into another fit of ostentatious laughter. Beyond annoyed, I strode forward, grabbed the remote, and turned the volume to a whisper, which of course, earned me a glare from my cat aunt.

I fought back with a chastising look. “You do realize that half the town can hear you, right? How do you plan to explain yourself if someone comes knocking on the door?”

She snickered. “I don’t have to worry. Everyone will think it’s you.”

I anchored my hands on my hips. “Oh really? What if they know I’m not home? What if Gertie comes over to check on the ruckus? She knows how late I work, and she’d want to know who was inside while I was gone. She might even use magic to break down the door with the pretense of checking on our house because of suspicious activity.”

Birdie blinked and shook her head as though my ranting was too much for her to comprehend. Then she brushed me off with a swipe of her paw through the air before she rolled to her feet, wobbling as she did. “You’re making a big deal out of nothing.”

I narrowed my gaze, even more suspicious of my dear cat aunt’s behavior. I glanced around the room until I spotted a beer can lying on its side next to a bowl full of golden liquid, which I presumed was beer. “Have you been drinking?”

She sat back on her haunches to keep from tipping off the couch. “Lighten up, little girl. Why are you so serious all the time?”

My dear aunt had taken her jabs too far, and I scoffed.
